Interstellar — Animated Title Sequence
For this Graphic Design III assignment, I was tasked with creating an original animated title sequence for an existing film. I chose Interstellar (2014), directed by Christopher Nolan, for its emotional depth, cinematic scale, and intricate relationship between time, space, and human endurance. My goal was to capture the film’s sense of wonder and isolation through visual pacing, atmospheric motion, and typography that reflects the tension between science and emotion.
This project, completed during my senior year, second semester in Graphic Design III, stands as one of the most complex and extensive motion pieces I’ve created. It required deep integration between Photoshop, Illustrator, and After Effects, combining asset development, compositional design, and heavy motion manipulation. The goal was to create an original title sequence for Interstellar that translated the film’s grand scale and emotional weight into a refined, visually cohesive animation. Every movement, light flare, and transition was carefully timed to capture the tension and beauty of space exploration.
Ideation & storyboard
Before beginning animation, I developed a series of sketches and storyboards to map out camera movement, timing, and visual flow. My goal was to maintain Interstellar’s sense of vastness while keeping the animation concise and purposeful. Each frame represents a key scene transition — from spacecraft movement and wormhole travel to moments of human connection and isolation.
I explored 2D animation paired with subtle 3D perspective shifts to achieve cinematic depth without overcomplicating the motion. Planning the storyboard first helped me organize pacing, decide on focal points, and ensure every transition supported the emotional tone of the sequence.
