Carterville Intermediate School Wayfinding System

Category: Environmental Design / Wayfinding
Year: 2025

Project Overview

The Carterville Intermediate School Wayfinding System was a comprehensive environmental design project focused on improving navigation and visual consistency throughout the school’s interior spaces. The goal was to create a signage system that was not only functional but also reinforced school pride and identity through cohesive branding and bold visual communication.

Objective

This project aimed to solve key challenges with the school’s existing signage—such as inconsistent visuals, lack of hierarchy, and minimal use of school branding—by designing a unified system that enhances clarity, accessibility, and atmosphere.

Design Approach

Drawing from the school’s Lion mascot and blue-and-orange color palette, the system incorporates clean typography, directional consistency, and strong contrast for maximum legibility. Each sign was designed with real-world materials in mind, including UV-printed acrylic panels mounted to powder-coated aluminum backers for durability.

Vinyl wall and glass applications were added to extend the identity beyond signage—transforming blank surfaces into immersive, motivational environments that celebrate the Carterville community.

Deliverables

  • Full signage suite: Directional, room ID, restroom, and area identifiers

  • Environmental branding: Large-format vinyl wall graphics and glass applications

  • Digital presentation deck with material specs and spatial mockups

Outcome

The final design system brings unity and energy to Carterville Intermediate School, turning wayfinding into an extension of school spirit. It demonstrates how thoughtful visual systems can create clarity while inspiring the people who move through the space every day.
